Roster Evaluation: Martell Webster

Martell Webster will be an NBA superstar, and the Blazers made a quality pick they won’t regret when they selected him. The kid’s just going through a rookie slump right now, and quite frankly needs to become more assertive. There are many times in games when he’s wide open from the 3-point line but doesn’t call for the ball/his teammates don’t pass it to him. Once he begins to feel more comfortable out there, he’ll get the ball more and his amazing talent will shine through. His shot’s definitely legit, as is his vastly-underrated athleticism. He’s got a body that can be trained/taught to play killer defense (with his size/wingspan), and with added strength, experience and instruction from a defensive-minded coach his defense will only continue to get better. This kid’s come a long way already, and I envision him to be a slightly less athletic version of Vince Carter when it’s all said and done.
