Roster Evaluation: Zach Randolph

Z-bo (or me-bo or z-dough depending on your point of view) is a player that is crucial to this team. like it or not, he is the centerpiece and our power forward of the future. That being said, this man can be a bit of a headcase sometimes. When he 's not having a good game, in a good relationship with his coach, or having a bad game he will pout. And when he pouts, he's useless. There is no excuse for him to have 7 points and 4 rebounds. However, he is beginning to come around to McMillan and this team's style and is improving by leaps and bounds every game. His conditioning has gotten better, as has his passing and his post play. He is a far cry from the Z-Bo of old, but he's getting closer and closer with each passing game. He is no longer the selfish, outside jump-shot shooting player we saw at the beginning of the season, and the reality is that this team lives and dies by how he plays. His defense is vastly improved (he held Duncan to 14 pts and is beginning to use his body to tame players like Dirk), and that can be attributed to the presence of Maurice Lucas. We need his post presence and rebounding to win, because quite frankly there is no one else to take his place. Zach can and will be an All-Star, and trading him now, before he is completely recovered, would be a mistake of epic porportions.

Not to mention that his "jumper" is pretty much automatic from a foot inside the three-point line. He's a great offensive rebounder, and the only guy on the Blazers that can draw a double team. Zach isn't the problem with this team.

it isnt automatic ill agree it is very good but it is quite streaky. He also still needs to work on shooting off the dribble going towards the basket.

I guess "automatic" isn't exactly true, but it's pretty damn close. In the beginning of the season, I found myself yelling at the TV every time Zach took one of those mid to long range jumpers, until it became apparent that Zach now has the capabilty to make that shot a good percentage of the time. You have to take into account that Zach is the only guy opposing teams have to take into consideration offensivly. When the Blazers get another viable offensive threat (most likely Darius, but probably not until next season) Zach's game will elevate. At least I hope. Between his improved shooting and passing, Zach is lined up to have a great all around game when he gets 100%. My guess is that next season Zach is going to make a lot of his doubters look foolish.

zach is a SCORER.
The team needed ONE guy they could count on to shoot it every night.
someone who wanted the ball in his hands.
Zach is doing well coming off surgery.
Zach is starting to understand he Must play defense and pass out of the double team better or he won't make the allstar team - EVER in the WEST.
Zach wants to be an allstar very much. I feel he is working hard.
